Meta-In-Chief generally shifted blame for his company’s recent unpopular bans, restrictions, and manipulation of its users to various 3rd parties. He correctly identified and averted every limb he could have gone out on while whispering substanceless pleasantries for his shareholders and factchecking partners. He staked his claim in the middle of the milquetoast mainstream, calling the FBI a ‘legitimate institution.’
Public/private classification of big tech platforms in light of Section 230 is up for debate, and moreso now as Zuckerberg revealed that the FBI approached Facebook about Russian Misinformation prior to the 2016 election. This part of the interview was widely mischaracterized, exaggerating the degree to which the picture he presented implies pressure by the FBI. He actually described it innocuously, as he does his own company’s digital atrocities:
Zuck: “Basically, the background here is the FBI, I think, basically came to us — some folks on our team — and was like, ‘Hey, just so you know, you should be on high alert. We thought that there was a lot of Russian propaganda in the 2016 election. We have it on notice that there’s about to be some kind of dump that’s similar to that. So just be vigilant.'”
